ITEM!: Our old pals ZENI GEVA are coming to Europe for a limited touring engagement - (!) - and get this - the line-up includes K.K. Null on vocals and guitar, Tabata Mitsuru on guitar and none other than Yoshida Tatsuya (of KOENJIHYAKKEI and RUINS) on drums! As some might recall, Yoshida was the drummer of
ZENI GEVA in 1989-90 as documented on ZG's first album "Maximum Money Monster" (and Yoshida has a history playing w/ Null in the legendary YBO2 and
GEVA2 to boot). Now ZENI GEVA's storied line-up has reunited - - - and these shows are sure to be crushingly intense. The tour begins in Vienna, Austria on April 8th!

ITEM!: To begin ( ! ) - As it turns out, catalog # GR95 sprinted through the pre-production process and is here ahead of schedule, beating out catalog numbers GR93 (GAY BEAST) and GR94 (PRE). Now, we can't think of any reasonable reason to withold this titanic title from out loyal legions of listeners, so we're going to let it out of the cage early! The release date is set at April 14th, but to those gambly grafters who want to take a leap of faith and order it sight unseen - we're offering it NOW for at a special discount - for one week only! ITEM!: The anticipation over GAY BEAST's arrival at Skin Graft is steadily climbing to fever pitch, so to wet those wanting whistles, we've brought aboard a handful of copies of their dynamite debut for direct distribution to all of our mirthful mailorder-ers! And best, yet - each cover is lovingly hand-screenprinted - making GAY BEAST "Disrobics" nothing short of a full-fledged art artifact (in fact)!

Here's the skinny:
Gay Beast was formed during the spring of 2005 in Minneapolis by Danimal Mal (keyboards/vocals) and Deb T. Tap (drums/percussion) under the premise of making queer-political music more ambitious in arrangement than their previous bands. An ad was placed online and Icky Rot (guitar) soon joined.

“Disrobics,” a collection of songs a year-and-a-half in the making, was recorded in the fall of 2006 by Mike Wisti, at Albatross Studio. Numerous stylistic touchstones include the nerviest asymmetric moments of Devo, the scrape and squeal of early 00's six-string renegades Arab on Radar and Erase Errata, the frenetic drum work of Hella, the linear arrangements of TWIN (formerly King Cobra), the chaotic-seeming polyrhythms of Captain Beefheart, and the vocalizations of Tim Hodgkinson and Yoko Ono. Trixie and The Treetrunks is an enchanting, luminouse, mind-melting, ten episode puppet mini-series created by Miss Pussycat and Quintron. The show includes appearances by Guitar Lightning, King Louie, Quintron and Miss Pussycat (Natch!), writer Andrei Codrescu (as the voice of the puppet "JJ Suede") - as well as witches, messages from the Center of the Earth, things frozen in blocks of ice, harvest fest, and the Happy Tree. This limited edition DVD includes special bonus features, including "the making of" (made for Dutch Televison), and "Witch in the Bloopers". See, it's not easy keeping these distributed titles in-stock - and when they are gone, 99% of the time, they are gone. With TV Grows Arms, The Chinese Stars fill out in all the right places - setting in motion a tsunami of new waves, fueled by noodle-stringed guitar riffs, seat of your pants lyrics and hallucinatory synths. Available in an extremely limited "virgin white vinyl edition" and with full color artwork by artist Matt Brinkman, this fast, forward audio movement takes music back to the base pleasures. First, Second, Third and back home again - all the bases are covered - and then some!

It looks like a few folks were banking on their month-end paychecks to clear before placing their orders, and over the weekend I had a few requests asking if it would be possible to extend the sale just a bit longer. SHORTY Thumb Days
For those unfamiliar with Shorty let me tell you that one: they no longer exist, and two: sound like no other band currently playing (they later transformed into the equally amazing but more complex and 'cough' avantgarde US MAPLE - but that's another story). The reviewers with less imagination compared them to the Jesus Lizard (and I suppose I've done just that by naming them) and yes, they do have that tight and unpredictible rhythm going, but Shorty have always been harder and more quirky than David Yow and co. These songs are frenzied and carefully mapped out at the same time, and the usual rock cliches are blown off the slate. So if you like vocal acrobatics and twisted songwriting, Thumb Days is definitly for you.
This is a great document of the "Chicago sound" (as in Rapeman, Killdozer, The Jesus Lizard etc.) and one of the more interesting buys, if you are ready to take your fascination for the above mentioned bands a step further.

BIG'N Cutthroat
"This record was their first full length, and for my money it's their best. At this point they were still very much a big, burly monster with all the hallmarks of a Midwestern noise rock band, The bass leads the charge on most songs, the drums are booming, the guitar is a fuzzy mess, and the vocals growl their way atop the whole oddly syncopated mess. It's really the epitome of early 90's noise rock, it fires on all cylinders, and will not disappoint.
